The very first batch of the Somos Costeros shirt which was available at Quevedo’s pop-up store at Mercado Altavista has a defect from the printing and drying process which means the blue ink fades when washed.
Bought one? You can swap your old for new at the pop-up store this week.
Band, gig and album shirts always look best when they’ve got that worn, beaten up vibe to them! Think old tour shirts: once the print has faded a little, and it looks like it’s seen a few gigs, it just gets cooler and cooler…
But, it’s not what you expect to happen to a brand-new shirt. Especially when you’ve just queued in line for an hour for it!
Like many others, I queued outside Mercado Altavista📍 on the first day of Quevedo’s pop-up store. June 23rd – La Noche de San Juan. One of the greatest nights in the Las Palmas calendar!
I’d been on the beach the night of the El Baifo drone show, that was cool, I’d listened to the album and loved the track with Los Gofiones, I wanted to see what the buzz was like firsthand, plus I wanted some cool merch…
I loved the concept of the traditional Canarian style tienda, but all the other shopkeepers in the market seemed a bit stunned by the whole thing: hundreds of teenagers, a couple of random British folks and nobody wanted any fruit, veg or their watch fixing.
I walked away with two shirts. They were €35 each and I can’t complain about the quality of the cotton: they’re nice, thick, and feel good.
I usually wear the (cheapest) lightest cotton stuff in Las Palmas so wearing a thicker shirt felt like I was wrapped up in La Calufa later that night when watching the Álvaro de Luna gig down Plaza de la Música📍.
The 8 stars shirt is my favourite and I was amazed at what a head-turner and conversation starter it turned out to be. A couple of kids pointed at my shirt and exclaimed Quevedo with awe and excitement; an older girl (60s) stopped me on Canteras📍 so she could read it, and as I was leaving the apartment some guy who knows ‘Pedrito‘, and had the pictures to prove it, started chatting with me.
This is the shirt that didn’t quite work out right on the first run.

Replace, or keep?
I’m keeping mine, here’s why.
- It was bought on day one of the store.
- I waited in line for an hour to buy it.
- It’s the very first print run.
- They’re rare.
That makes it kind of special in my mind.
When you see someone wearing one of these shirts in six months, look at the print. If it’s clean and crisp the chances are they bought it online, or had it exchanged. If it’s a bit faded and has that “gig worn” vibe to it, it’s an authentic original souvenir of the popup store, and a bit of rare music merch history.
